Home Security Advice, Keep it Out of Sight

The well used saying ‘Out of Sight, Out of Mind’ is so relevant when it comes to reducing Crime

If a person who is not adversed to committing a Crime spots an easy opportunity, then the temptation will probably be just too much for them, they may be simply walking past with no intention of carrying out a Crime, but they see an open garage door with all your valuable tools lined up on the wall, or they see your valued Motorcycle sitting there glinting in the sun (because you have just washed it), then all of a sudden it looks like an opportunity that can’t be missed.

Now this may be in the form of actually stealing an object there and then, more often than not it will be the trigger to consider returning at a later date, the results of the Risk & Reward theory.

Risk & Reward
What Risk is involved if the Crime is committed ?
What Reward is potentially involved if the Crime is committed ?
If the Reward out-ways the Risk, then it is likely the Crime will be committed.

So one of the best ways of reducing the odds of being a victim of a theft, is to make the apparent Risk out-way the apparent Reward, simple ideas can be put into practise such as:

  • Keep the doors to your Garage or Shed closed when ever possible.
  • Don’t leave your valuables outside for any longer than necessary.
  • If you are outside working on one of your valuables, make it obvious that you have seen anyone who is taking an unusual interest in you as they walk past.
  • Have an obvious CCTV Camera or a good replica Dummy Camera monitoring the location.
  • Have other visible Security, perhaps a Siren Box on the building, good quality Chain & Locks, Security Signs etc, any thing to make it look like it would take some effort to successfully break-in (increasing their risk for no bigger reward).
  • If there are windows in a storage building, make them hard to look through, this doesn’t have to be in the form of blanking them completely off (you will probably want the light at some time or other), it may be in the form of cheap blind or curtain, shrubbery growing on the outside making preventing people from easily looking in.
  • If you have Gates on the property, get in the habit of keeping them closed, a closed gate makes it very difficult for a potential thief to casually walk into a property to have a look, it also creates the first line of defence to the property (the more lines of defence result in a bigger risk for no bigger reward).
  • If you are going to have gates fitted, then large closed in gates are a great deterrent, they prevent someone from easily looking in, together with making a more difficult obstacle to climb over.
  • If you are lucky enough to fit Automatic Gates onto the property, program them so that they are always closed, a great deterrent.

By carrying out just one or two of these simple measures doesn’t have to cost a fortune, it doesn’t have to stop you leading a normal life, but it may just put the odds back into your favour, hopefully reducing the risk of being a victim of crime, in turn giving you a more peaceful and relaxing life.
