Typical Applications would be:

  • Server Rooms.
  • Fridges & Freezers (these could be storing food or medicines).
  • Incubators.
  • Holiday Homes.
  • Water Pumps.
  • Security.
  • Medical Monitoring Machines.

How They Work !!

Most systems will simply plug into a wall socket, in the event of a Power Cut the Internal Battery of the Mains Power Failure Alarm will kick into action and operate the Alarm, where the difference lies is in the way that the Alarm will inform the Key-Holder or Key-Holders.

The Power Failure Alarm will only be monitoring the ring main that it is plugged into, if you need to monitor multiple zones then you will need addition Alarms, or choose a system where it is possible to add additional Wireless Monitors which would can connect to the primary control panel.

Type of Alerts:

Different systems will alert owners & key-holders in different ways, listed below are the most common methods:

  • Internal Buzzer, Siren or Flashing Light (these systems will simply trigger a buzzer, siren or flashing light inside the building being monitored for the duration of a power cut). Example.
  • External Buzzer, Siren or Flashing Light (these systems will trigger a buzzer, siren or flashing light located outside the building being monitored, for the duration of a power cut). Example.
  • GSM Text Message (one of the most popular methods these days), in the event of a Power Cut the Alarm System will send a SMS (text message) to one or more Key-holders stating the power has failed, followed by a further SMS when the Power is reinstated).Example.
  • Telephone Call ( a few systems can be plugged into a telephone line, and contact key-holders with your own pre-recorded message in the event of a power cut). Example.

GSM Mains Power Failure Alarms:

Be careful when choosing your GSM Mains Power Failure Alarm, as some systems will allow you to program a desired duration of a Power Cut before contacting Key-Holders (ideal for locations prone to a lot of very short Power Cuts), it is also important to understand how many Key-Holders can be contacted, as there are many systems available that will only contact the primary Key-Holder (which may or may not be a problem for you). We would recommend asking a few relevant questions before making a purchase.

Different Ring Mains:

If you need to monitor different ring mains within the same building, your options are to have either one Mains Power Failure Alarm connected to each ring main, or to choose a system which allows you to add additional Wireless Monitors.  These additional Monitors would be plugged into sockets on a different ring main to that of the Central Control Panel, in the event of a Power Cut a wireless signal would be transmitted back to the Central Control Panel which would then activate the chosen Alarm method. Example.

Summary:

Prevention is far better than waiting until after the event, a suitably chosen & located Mains Power Failure Alarm can really save you a lot of grief & cost, there are many models to choose from now, the main decision should be you deciding on how you or your staff need to be Alerted should the power fail.
