Parking Post, Should I Choose a Fold Down Type ?

By | February 10, 2014

Fold Down Parking Posts have six key features:

  • With most types of Fold Down Parking Posts, there is no need to worry about what is underground as they simply bolt down to the ground (there are a few exceptions when you need to use a spigot based design, but you would be working on loose ground on these occasions).
  • They are normally the easiest & quickest to install.
  • They are very affordable.
  • When not in use, they flat onto the ground, there is no need to worry about storing them away.

  • They are available in many styles & colours.
  • There is a choice of locking mechanisms.

How do they work?

Most Fold Down Parking Posts are supplied with a mounting plate with either 2, 3 or 4 pre-drilled holes which are used to bolt the post down onto the ground, for installing into loose ground there are spigot based versions available from Ultra Secure Direct.
When the post is in use, it would be locked into the upright position using various types of internal locks or padlocks, depending on which model is chosen.
When the posts are not required, they are unlocked and left laying flat onto the ground.

Important Information:

These posts are not designed to be driven over when not in use, they are designed to be positioned so that a vehicle would simply drive over them with a wheel either side. For this reason it is very important that the height of the post when laying flat is taken into account, before making a purchase. Some of the larger Fold Down Parking Posts may be too high for a low vehicle to safely manoeuvre over.

How do I fit a Bolt Down Fold Down Posts?

  1. Choose the location of the installation and take notice of the ground surface.
  2. For concrete surfaces purchase standard ground anchor bolts, anti-tamper security bolts would be our recommendation, available from Ultra Secure Direct.
  3. For good quality tarmac, special tarmac bolts will be required, available from Ultra Secure Direct.
  4. For loose ground such as Gravel, Dirt, Grass or poor Tarmac a choice can be made, either use a spigot based Parking Post or dig a hole and make a concrete pad.
  5. Locate the post into the desired position, and mark the hole positions.
  6. Drill a holes using  the correct size for the chosen ground anchor.
  7. Insert the ground anchor firmly into the drilled holes.
  8. Re-position the post and firmly fit the bolts, if you are using a security version you would tighten until the top shears off.
  9. The Post is now installed.
  10. This process would take  approximately 30 minutes providing you have the correct tools.

How do I fit a Spigot based Fold Down Parking Post?

  1. Dig a hole slightly deeper than the ground spigot supplied (normally between 200 – 350 mm).
  2. The hole would be approximately 200 – 400 mm wide, the loser the ground the wider the hole.
  3. Spread a small layer of gravel in the bottom of the hole.
  4. Place the post centrally into the hole ensuring the flat mounting plate is just proud of the surface, adjust the height by adding or removing gravel.
  5. Mix up either cement or a post mix which can be obtained from most builder merchants.
  6. Place the cement or mix into the hole around the ground spigot, ensure the post is level by using a spirit level.
  7. Let the cement or post mix go solid, which can vary from an hour in the height of summer to a day or two in winter, follow guide lines on the cement bag regarding mixing in particularly cold weather (normally below 1 to 2 degrees).
  8. This process would take  approximately 1 hour provided you have the correct tools.

model.

Q: How do they lock?
A: Either padlock or integral locks, these can be top or bottom mounted, depending on which model is chosen.

Q: Can we have them keyed alike?
A: Yes

Q: I have a sloping ground, can they still be used?
A: Yes, but the post would need to be installed level, which would result in a small ridge on one side of the top plate, and the post would also be laying flat onto the ground, normally pointing up hill.
