Chicken Theft On The Increase, Best Security

By | April 25, 2014

A new & unusual trend has been noticed during the early months of 2014 by the North Yorkshire Police, which is Chicken & Poultry theft ?

Local Police Officers are not sure exactly why, as this is a trend they haven’t seen before, but can only assume it is down to the increase in market value for the birds which in turn relates to a better return when selling them at local markets or corner shops.

Going back to the well proven Risk & Reward theory, the thief is normally taking no more of a Risk but for a better Reward !!

This is obviously on top of the ever increasing rise on the Fox population since the ban on hunting, so double trouble.

Chicken & Poultry Human Theft & Fox Problems

What Can We Do About It ?

There are no easy solutions to this problem, due to the nature & often remote locations of the pens, listed below are a few suggestions to consider:

  • Battery Powered Wireless Perimeter Beams & Solar Siren (the siren is armed with a remote control when leaving the site, if anyone or anything walks past the beams the siren & bright flashing light is activated, this could be effective with foxes, if the site is within visual or audible range of your home or a neighbour it could also be effective with potential thieves).
  • Wireless Perimeter Alarm & GSM Dialler (if the pen is remote, and not within visual or audible distance of anyone, you could deploy a set of beams and a receiver/gsm dialler powered from a hidden battery, this would be able to contact key-holders by telephone or text message when triggered, with or without any sound on site, ideal for catching thieves).
  • Battery Powered Camera’s (these CCTV Cameras are powered by AA batteries, and will record video clips if the built in detector picks up any movement, the MMS versions will also send a picture to your mobile phone giving you exact verification to report it to the police).
  • Locks & Chains (it goes without saying, that good chains & locks should be used on the entrances, these can even be the new styled alarm locks which have built in Sirens which may deter some thieves).
  • Security Signs ( a very cheap & easy option is to fit some Security Warning Signs around the Pens, these may make the opportunist thief think twice about carrying out a Crime).
  • Dummy CCTV Camera’s (one or more good quality Dummy CCTV Camera’s may also deter some opportunist thieves, especially if used together with some Security Signs).

The above suggestions may help & will not cost a fortune if you purchase a Security Systems designed for simple DIY Installation, should you need advice please contact Ultra Secure Direct who specialize in these types of products, they are happy to give you Friendly, No Obligation Advice.
