Yes, we believe that in most cases Dummy CCTV Cameras do actually work, but not all of the time, let us explain:
Most law abiding citizens driving past a speed camera will actually slow down, even though they may disagree with them and probably even think the camera is turned off, but they will slow down.
But a tiny proportion of the population will simply disregard them, this may be because they are in a stolen vehicle, or they have no respect for the law or society.
The same principle will apply to Dummy CCTV, most people including opportunist thieves & vandals will see a Camera, and just wonder if it is real?, and because most thieves & burglars work on the principle of Risk & Reward they will think twice about carrying out the crime, preferring to move onto a property with no security. It also shows that security has been considered and that you may have additional devices.
The professional thief or repeat offender may not care about you having CCTV, but this is where your additional Security would also help.
What are Dummy CCTV Cameras?
Dummy CCTV Cameras are also referred too as Decoy, False & Realistic CCTV Cameras,
they are basically a copy of a real CCTV Camera made from either plastic, aluminium or steel, and can be purchased in many shapes and sizes for internal or external applications, just as real CCTV Cameras can be.
Most of the Dummy Cameras will have a slow flashing red light (LED) in the front of the Camera powered by a battery or built in solar panels. The use of this flashing light is optional, most customers like them, some do not, simply remove the battery if you do not wish to have it.
They would be fitted in and around a home or business, covering particular risk areas such as:
- Front, Side or Back Gardens.
- Factory Walls.
- Inside Retail Shops or Offices.
They can be used singularly or together with other multiple Dummy CCTV Cameras, sometimes these multiple installations would use different size and designed Dummy Cameras in different locations, similar to a live CCTV installation.
Sometimes they will be used together with a live CCTV System.
The cost of these Dummy CCTV Camera’s are very reasonable, and can be purchased from under £10 going up to around £40 for the large models.
Summary:
Out opinion is that the use of one or more Dummy CCTV Cameras is a good investment, and will do no harm. But we would recommend they are used together with other basic Security products, such as Perimeter Alarm Systems, Internal Alarm Systems and Door & Window Locks, don’t rely on a single Dummy Camera to protect your complete home or business.
We would also generalize and recommend the following locations would probably benefit from the suggested types of Dummy CCTV Cameras, although this is obviously a personal choice:
- Retail Buildings: Large External Traditional & Dome Cameras & small Dome Internal Cameras.
- Factories: Large External Traditional & Dome Cameras.
- Homes: Small External Traditional or Domed Cameras.
