By following some Logical Basic Rules & Security Tips (listed below) can reduce the odds of a Burglar being just unable to resist at an attempted Burglary whilst you are away.
Sign Post the house is unoccupied:
- Curtains left open or closed whilst you are away (is it possible for family members to drop by and change the position of these, even if it can’t be every day, there are even automatic Curtain devices now for people that tend to do a lot of Travelling).
- Newspapers and Post left to build up in the letter box or porch, these are a dead give away and also propose a potential Fire or Arson Risk (ask a neighbour or family member to drop by and move them).
- No Lights on inside the property (put one or two lamps on a timer).
- No Lights Outside (there are many Security Lights or Lamps that will turn On as a person approaches, these can be powered by Mains or Solar Panels).
- No TV or PC operating (purchase an affordable TV simulator).
- Rubbish or Recycling Bins left out: (ask a neighbour or family member to move them).
- Long Grass: (cut it before leaving home, or even get someone to Cut it whilst you are away, if you are intending to be away for a long time).
- Milk Bottles: (for the few customers still having Milk deliveries, ensure the delivery is cancelled).
- Gates Left Open: (an open gate makes burglars feel more inclined to enter the grounds as they can just as easily leave, very important in Rural situations or applications with long Drives).
Access:
- Rear access which is not overlooked by neighbours: (make it hard for a potential Burglars to gain access to the most vulnerable parts, this can be in the form of locked Gates, good condition high Fencing, thick Bushes or even Fence Spikes fitted into relevant areas).
- Front access points shouldn’t be hidden or blocked by overgrown Trees & Shrubbery (keep them trimmed).
Advertising (don’t advertise your valuables):
- Don’t leave your Garage Doors wide open during the day (tempting Burglars to your most prized Motor Cycle, Quad Bike, Lawn Mower or Power Tools: (keep the doors shut if possible).
- Don’t show valuable IPad’s, Mobile Phones or Wallets sitting inside a front window or vehicle: (keep them out of sight).
Security Systems (there are many different and affordable Outdoor & Indoor Alarms & CCTV Camera systems these days, all of which may help to deter or prevent a Burglary, but if Budgets are tight you can still add some very basic items that will or could help, these include):
- If you can’t budget for or justify an Alarm or Camera, a simple Dummy Alarm Siren or good Dummy CCTV Camera can put some doubt in the mind of a potential Burglar).
- There are affordable Dog Barking machines now that can sit inside your Home or Garage together with relevant Dog Warning Signs, these are very simple to set up.
- Signs & Stickers: (even a Security Sign or Sticker on the House or Outbuilding will at least inform the potential Burglar that you have thought about security).
Escape Routes (minimise these where possible):
- Easy Escape Routes are loved by Burglars: (try not to give the potential Burglars a simple choice of escape routes, should they need a quick get away, you could block these by growing bushes, fitting high fences, locking gates etc).
These are just some basic Security tips that are widely recommended, we would always recommend fitting suitable security Systems to your property if possible, but these alone are not the golden ticket.
