Home Security Advice, Try not to make it Personal

By | August 27, 2014

As hard as it may sound, some sound advice from talking to active Police Officers is ‘Try Not To Make It Personal & Get to Involved’ should you be the unfortunate victim of Crime !!

I am not saying:

  • Look the other Way !!
  • Don’t try to prevent or stop the Crime !!
  • Don’t report the Crime to the Police !!
  • Don’t refuse to give evidence in Court !!

But we have heard many stories whilst talking to Police Officers about Home & Business Owners (especially in the rural community) taking the law into their own hands, perhaps catching a suspected Criminal on their land and physically assaulting them or worse (as much as most law abiding folk would probably cheer).
The problem is that even if this person was (or was not) guilty, they may be a member of a gang, they may be a member of a family with a violent history, they may be heavily dependant of drugs, and they now know where you Live, and should the individual or individuals decide that this has become personal, it is very easy indeed for them to make your life HELL.

The other problem is, that they are less likely to be convicted for the Crime, should it be perceived by our soft and liberal justice system that they have been a victim of crime their-selves (as unpalatable as this seams)

It is far better that these individuals see the Enemy as the Police, therefore by being caught by the Police, with the full help and support of you & the community, there is far less chance of  retaliation coming back towards you, your family and your property.

Let the Police be the ‘Bad Guys’.

The best solution is to work on your Crime Prevention, make it hard or undesirable for anyone to want to come onto your land, even more so getting into your Home or Business, this could save you lots of potential stress and ill feeling (even if you catch them).

It doesn’t cost much to fit some basic Crime Prevention Products these days, it doesn’t take much more time or effort to have better security routines, such as:

  • Keep Gates, Doors & Windows Closed & Locked !!
  • Keep Shrubbery trimmed back (less places for a potential thief to hide) !!
  • Maintain Security Lights !!
  • Keep Machinery & Tools out of sight, and in minimum buildings (remove temptation) !!
  • Keep Hedges & Fence panels in tact !!
  • Communicate with Neighbours !!
  • Remove or Block Easy Escape Routes !!
  • Fit Alarms & Cameras (you do not need to spend a fortune) !!
  • The List is Endless !!

If you can establish & confirm that you have Intruders on your Land, the Police are far more likely to attend with Speed.
