Security Post, should I choose a Removable Security Post?

By | January 6, 2014

Removable Security Posts have six main benefits:

  • They are relatively easy & quick to fit.
  • They supply a good level of security & strength.
  • When not in use, no obstacles or trip hazards are left on the ground, very important in locations with pedestrian & vehicle access !!
  • They are generally very affordable.
  • The depth of the ground spigot should not be anywhere near any underground services, very important factor to consider.
  • There is a choice of sizes, colours & locking mechanisms.

How do they work?

They are supplied with a short ground spigot, this spigot is fitted into the ground and has a hinged top lid, which safely covers up the access hole when the post is not in use, this is a very important factor in locations with public pedestrian or vehicle access. The Removable Post would be locked into the upright position inside the ground spigot using various types of locking mechanisms, which varies between chosen models.

How do I fit them?

  1. Dig a hole slightly deeper than the ground spigot supplied (normally between 200 – 350 mm).
  2. The hole would be approximately 200 – 400 mm wide, the loser the ground the wider the hole.
  3. Spread a small layer of gravel in the bottom of the hole.
  4. Place the ground spigot centrally into the hole ensuring the hinged lid is just proud of the surface, adjust the height by adding or removing gravel.
  5. Mix up either cement or a post mix which can be obtained from most builder merchants.Security-Post-Ground-Spigot-sss
  6. Place the cement or mix into the hole around the ground spigot, ensure it is level, this can be done by temporarily sliding the post into the spigot allowing you to use a spirit level.
  7. Ensure no cement goes inside the hole.
  8. Carefully remove the post without moving the base.
  9. Let the cement or post mix go solid, which can vary from an hour in the height of summer to a day or two in winter, follow guide lines on the cement bag regarding mixing in particularly cold weather (normally below 1 to 2 degrees).
  10. This process would take  approximately 1 hour provided you have the correct tools.
