Advice on positioning a Dakota Driveway Alarm PIR into the most Efficient Location

Our best selling Dakota Driveway Alarm includes a battery powered PIR with a unique narrow one sides beam designed to avoid detecting small ground animals, but because of this narrow beam some thought should be given to the positioning of it.

PIR Information:

  • It is powered by a single PP3 battery, which will last over one year in many applications.

  • It has a 800 metre transmission range back to the Wireless Receiver.
  • It has an adjustable detection range of up to 20 metres, this can be reduced.
  • It has a unique narrow, one sided beam, at the distance of 20 metres the diameter of the beam will be approximately 1 metre or 1.5 metre, depending on the filter setting.
  • It can be mounted in many types of locations, a protective wooden bird box is available and very popular.

How & where should we fit the PIR:

Although the PIR can be used in many different types of applications, the most common application is for monitoring an entrance or driveway, so our recommendations for this type of installation are listed below together with a clear diagram:

  • Mount the PIR between  1 metre – 1.5 metre above the ground & aim the beam parallel with the ground.
  • If possible mount the PIR between 2 metre – 6 metres away from the edge of the Drive.
  • Aim the PIR between 30-60 degrees across the drive pointing away from incoming traffic.
  • Adjust the detection range to suit your application, starting with full range.
  • Set the filter inside the PIR to “OFF” during Winter months and then Re-set it back to “ON” for the rest of the Year.
