Best Shed Alarm, Silent or Audible Model ?

By | April 17, 2014

It is well known that Sheds are some of the most vulnerable buildings around, therefore choosing an Alarm for these buildings is an important jobThe reasons these buildings are so vulnerable, together with some basic Security advice can be found in the article in the following link, please click here

Choosing Shed Alarms

Choosing Shed Alarms

Fitting an Alarm to these buildings is the most common & affordable solution for most people, and these can be broken down into two basic types:

  • Audible Alarms (an alarm that activates sirens which can be heard by the Intruder).
  • Silent Alarms (an alarm which can only be heard by the home owner).

Power Considerations:

  • Have you got mains power inside or close to the Shed, if so you can choose to use an alarm with a control panel which plugs into a standard wall socket together with having battery back up, this could be located inside the shed, inside a nearby shed or garage or even inside the house (provided the house is within range of the chosen wireless alarm system), an example of one of these can be found by clicking on this link.
  • If you have no reliable power inside or near to the Shed, then this is no problem as there is now a mass of good battery or solar powered Shed Alarms, most are a battery powered PIR with a built in Siren, these would be the least favoured unless accompanied by a separate Siren which then prevents an Intruder simply breaking the stand-alone PIR to stop the Siren, a good & simple Battery Alarm with additional Sirens can be found by clicking on this link.

Siren Considerations:

There are a wide range of Sirens to choose from, including different power sources including:

  • Battery Powered.
  • Solar Powered.
  • Transformer Powered.

There are different sized Sirens to choose from, which is an important factor when protecting a Shed, there may just not be the room to fit a large Siren. You may choose to fit the Siren on a larger building close to the Shed allowing you to fit the largest of Sirens (modern wireless alarms & sirens make this option very possible), or you may decide to only use internal Sirens.

Sirens can also be chosen with or without Flashing LED’s, this will often be down to the chosen power supply.

Type of Detector Considerations:

There is an array of Detectors to choose from to help secure your Shed, these include:

  • PIR’s (detects movement from people or large animals).
  • Magnetic Contacts (detects a door or window being opened).
  • Vibration Sensors (detects violent attack to a door or window).
  • Pressure Mat (detects people standing on a mat).

Wireless Transmission Consideration:

Modern Wireless Alarms make it possible to protect multiple Sheds with one Alarm, they also allows you to install Sirens away from the primary building, our advice would be to consider the distance & obstructions between these locations, advice about Wireless Transmission can be found by clicking on this LINK

So if you choose to use an Audible Alarm, take note of:

  • The Power Source.
  • The Siren Options.
  • The Detector Choice.
  • Wireless Transmission.

 SILENT ALARMS:

 Detector Considerations:

Again there is an array of Detectors to choose from when using a Silent Shed Alarm, these include:

  • Indoor PIR’s (detect movement from people or large animals).
  • Outdoor PIR’s (detects movement from people or large animals).
  • Outdoor Perimeter Beams (creates an invisible fence).
  • Magnetic Contacts (detects a door or window being opened).
  • Vibration Sensors (detects violent attack to a door or window).
  • Pressure Mat (detects people standing on a mat).

Wireless Transmission:

By far the most important factor when purchasing a Silent Alarm, the Wireless signal from the chosen Detectors has to be able to reach the location of the Receiver or Receivers, this needs to be in all types of weather conditions including damp & dreary European days, but just as important in the height of summer when the trees & shrubbery are in full bloom. Further details about Wireless Transmission are explained by clicking on this LINK .

Reception:

Once you have chosen on your Detectors. and taken the Wireless Transmission into account, you then need to consider how you wanting Alerting in the event of an activation, the wide range of options include:

  • Chime (various levels of volume available).
  • Internal Buzzers & Sirens (to ensure you wake up).
  • Telephone Dialers (contacts you by Telephone, Email or Text message).
  • Flashing Lights (ideal for loud environments or for customers with hearing issues).
  • A combination of all.

Summary:

So the decision that needs to be made is that do you want to be alerted to the presence of an Intruder without them being alerted, if so look at a Silent Alarm, or do you just want the Intruder to be alerted hopefully scaring them away by using an Audible Shed Alarm. Some customers will choose a combination of both, deciding which ones to Arm depending on who is actually at home, if this is the case you would be advised to have one of each, this can be done normally still be done on a tight budget.

And don’t forget you can still add some very basic additional Security products to deploy alongside the chosen Alarm including:

  • Combination Locks.
  • Dummy CCTV.
  • Signs & Labels.
  • Locks & Chains.
